For 13 years, Chad has been building his dream car.
It’s a serious ride. A 2009 twin-turbo Nissan 370Z pushing 550 horsepower to the rear wheels.
He’s done nearly all the work himself, from suspension upgrades to custom exhaust, and his Z turns heads at Sebring track events and local car shows.
With all those performance mods, Chad figured a fire extinguisher was smart insurance. “Especially after adding new fuel lines and exhaust manifolds, I thought, let me get a fire extinguisher just in case,” he says.
When trouble finally came, though, it wasn’t the fuel system or the turbos that caused it.
Driving home from a car show at the drag strip, Chad caught a sharp, chemical smell. “I’ve done stereo work for years, so I recognized the smell of an electrical fire,” he recalls.
Within seconds, smoke began filling the cabin, and the engine died.
He pulled over, flung the door open, and saw flames behind the passenger seat. They were already devouring the interior panels.
“It wasn’t just smoldering. There were actual flames,” Chad says. “If I didn’t get it out quick, it could have easily spread.”
Chad grabbed his H3R Performance extinguisher from the rear strut bar.
One quick blast, and the fire was gone.

The culprit turned out to be a loose stereo ground wire. It had fallen out of the clip, shorted out the fuel pump, and sparked the blaze.
But as bad as the damage was, it could have been much worse.
“I had no water, nothing else in the car. There was nowhere to run and get help. I was out in the middle of nowhere,” Chad says. “Without the extinguisher, I’d have been trying to smother it with my shirt.”
Instead of burning his car to the ground, the damage was limited to a few melted plastic panels. But fixing them gave him the perfect excuse to upgrade to a new titanium strut bar.
Today, his 370Z is back on the road and on the track, looking better than ever.
And the H3R Performance fire extinguisher that saved it is always within arm’s reach.
"If you’ve modified your car at all, a fire extinguisher is a must. Get one small enough to mount where you can grab it fast. It’s just good insurance." |
